Thomas Crawford’s Statue of Freedom that tops the United States Capitol has an ironic history. Without the work of Philip Reid, an enslaved sculptor, it wouldn’t have been possible. He was paid more than other slaves working on the project, and he was only paid directly on Sundays. The other six days, pay would go directly to his employer. Read Philip’s story here.
